Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
