New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
